In the days before nursing uniforms were obsolete, the “capping ceremony” was a high point in a nursing student’s career. The ceremony took place during the middle of the first year of studies and marked a passage to the next level of the profession. Often a faculty member or a fellow student would do the honors of placing the cap. Here, 19-year-old Frances Bullock beams as she receives her cap in 1943.
